Bocadillos Restaurant Review

: Known for his delightful Piperade restaurant, chef-author Gerald Hirigoyen offers bright breakfasts (including Catalan sausage-stuffed talao, aka Basque wraps), small sandwiches (bocadillos, Spanish for "small bites"), and vivid, satisfying tapas to hip office workers and other loyal locals, most of whom sit at the sleek, friendly bar or share a central communal table. Aged Serrano ham, Basque-style braised tripe, and plump prawns a la plancha with lemon confit are popular; beef tartare, pigs' trotters, crispy sweet-and-sour chicken wings, traditional flaky-crusted empanadas and smoky blistered peppers add edgy diversity. Mushroom escabeche and al dente Brussels sprouts are toothsome meatless options; the huge wedge-cut patatas bravas are hot-pepperishly brava indeed. Spanish wines --- including sherries and moscatels --- pair with everything. Try salted caramel flan for dessert.
