| Primed for a hearty and convivial dining experience (after all, this place receives wow reviews) we left the restaurant with a bad taste instead. The combination of indifferent, even lazy, service (no one offered bread, water or much interest in a lone patron) and frankly dismal food made us wonder why we had bothered. Take the steak frites, for example, one of the dishes that has hit DC by storm. Needing to be cooked to order so that both steak and fries arrive at the table temptingly hot, this version appeared almost immediately. In fact, the meat was barely warm and the potatoes, limp. Perhaps the better bet would be the much-touted meatloaf with buttermilk mashed potatoes before winding up the meal with a slice of chocolate truffle cake. Bluesy jazz background music and a youthful crowd (both staff and patrons) foretell management caters to the young and hip, who must not count on great cooking as part of the meal's appeal. |
