The idea of eating at a wine bar is generally dismissed but it shouldn't be in the case of downtown Napa's Bounty Hunter. With 40 wines offered by the glass and more than 400 bottles on the list, it is the wine that attracts, but the food that keeps you coming back. With a kitchen smaller than most car interiors, much of the actual cooking has been relegated to a couple of impressive barbecues and smokers located in the alleyway behind the store. What comes from the postage stamp-size facilities is impressive; whole roast chicken served on a Tecate beer can that is teasingly rubbed with Cajun spices, fall-off-the-bone barbecue ribs served with both a tomato-based red sauce and mustard-based yellow sauce, and an artichoke dip that could easily be a meal itself. More health-conscious diners are not disappointed with ample salads that include local purveyors' fresh ingredients. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a British hunting lodge, with leather chairs and giant stuffed bears, but it is people-watching at its best with many local winemakers elbowing for a table and a freshly grilled steak or hamburger.
