Bourbon Steak Restaurant Review

: Things start out playfully at the San Francisco location of Michael Mina's Bourbon Steak, and they stay that way, despite the restaurant's seriously lofty ceiling, dark columns and dramatic wall mirrors. Dinner begins with an amuse-bouche of three flavored duck-fat french fries paired with dipping sauces, a nod to the fare of less luxurious steakhouses. Beets matched with burrata, cress and onion-caper emulsion manages to mix the sweet, the earthy, the creamy, the crunchy, and the piquant without requiring too much strategic forking. Classic grilled foie gras is met with huckleberry sauce on crispy fennel brioche---satisfying when paired with a fruity, off-sweet Riesling. The wine list features many French bottles; be sure to employ charming sommelier Noah Dranow for his expert pairings. And the steak. Our Snake River Farms American Kobe rib cap was rich, slightly crisp on the outside and mostly tender on the inside. Its accompanying rutabaga emulsion played a fine sidekick. For dessert, we recommend the beignets with caramel custard and the pumpkin tart with sweet cheese ice cream, cranberries and halved kumquats.
