THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Braai Restaurant Review:

Hell’s Kitchen continues to push international boundaries with a trip to South Africa at the lovely Braai (the South African word for barbecue). Braai brings Manhattan a new twist on ’cue by introducing grilled game meats like ostrich and venison. A ruby-colored jar of the restaurant’s signature wine cocktail hints at some of the distinctive dishes to come. Order a plate of sambals, sauces ranging from fiery to fruity and tart, to accompany the dishes. Among the mini-sosaties (brochettes), ostrich is low-fat, as promised, and well paired with a tamarind sauce. The prawns peri-peri, Mozambican prawns spiced up with a pepper-based sauce and served with saffron basmati rice, reflect the Indian influences on South African cuisine. African roadrunner is another take on ostrich, this time herb-crusted and served rosy with a blackberry peri-peri sauce. For dessert, the malva pudding, a creamy creation set on custard, is perfect for sharing. This is a restaurant that encourages adventure while absorbing the African-inspired setting, a barbecue tent of sorts and a peaceful reprieve from busy Eighth Avenue and the crowded Theatre District.
