| Ernest and Peter Lepore believe in world peace and great food, though not necessarily in that order. Older brother Peter manages the business and Ernest makes his own mozzarella, smokes his own salmon and dusts his silky roasted peppers with crunchy bread crumbs that slide off as seductively as a T-shirt at Chippendale's. And, for those concerned about their own seductive powers, he has developed a healthy dining menu like no other. Carbs, fat, protein and calories are as fine-tuned as a Stradivarius, though diners are aware only that the soups, salads, wraps, buckwheat pastas and platters, as well as a chocolate cake that took over a year to create, taste terrific. The family emigrated from Naples well over a century ago and owns Ferrara, a New York City landmark. The colorful banners you pass on your way upstairs to a room with open skylights and a view overlooking the Third Street Promenade represent the troubled nations of the world. |
