| Firmly established as San Diego's preeminent bread source, Hillcrest's Bread & Cie continues to exceed its reputation. Owners Charles Kaufman and Chris Jurca and their staff hand form the crusty peasant-style loaves that are served in numerous local restaurants and markets. Made daily, the bread honors European artisan traditions. We like to pop in while shopping or before a movie to grab a roast beef with horseradish cream on sourdough or a roasted eggplant with red peppers on kalamata olive bread. The lunchbox is a local favorite: any sandwich packed with bread chips and lemon cake. Scones, éclairs, fancy cupcakes and brownies---and don’t miss the blackberry miroir cheesecake tarte---as well as specialty coffee options round out the simple Mediterranean-style menu.
