A high-toned honky-tonk with a bevy of burgers and beers and a clientele that spans the social spectrum.

The 50-50 can claim status as a haute honky-tonk---and an anomaly in its high-toned Alamo Heights ’hood. We aren’t fooled by the bands, the bogus bad-boy attitude or the effigies of Elvis; especially at lunch the service is almost endearingly offhand. Lunch is also less acoustically challenging than evening, so if you want to enjoy a conversation, this is the time to sample burgers such as the signature “El Jefe” with pico de gallo and blue cheese crumbles accompanied by house-made potato chips, as size is the major virtue of the eye-popping Shiner Bock-battered onion rings. We don’t recommend “Elvis’s Deviled Eggs” either; they are prettily piped and hit with a dusting of paprika, but there is little underlying flavor. There’s a kids’ menu, but we recommend taking baby burgerhounds only at lunch or very early evening, when they are sure to appreciate the classic ’nilla pudding. There are numerous beers to serve as adult burger buddies.
