The great golden Buddha has smiled upon this Stephen Starr restaurant, now replicated in New York and Atlantic City. The hip décor is unimpeachably striking: sheets of water flowing at the entrance, dramatic lighting, neo-Philippe Starck furniture and that shiny, serene-looking Buddha. The place has been crowded from day one, so reservations are a must. Still, even a wait can’t spoil the panko-crusted fried oysters, duck and foie gras dumplings and moist Japanese black cod. It’s tempting to feast on the appetizers, including the crispy calamari salad with multi-colored greens, tea-smoked ribs and sizzling seared sashimi. The attractive, white-clad waitstaff will encourage you to share a number of dishes. Beware of ordering your entire meal at once---everything comes out of the kitchen in a flash, and you’ll wind up feeling rushed. Pace the meal yourself for a much better experience. Try the dessert sampler, an array of mini-versions of everything on the dessert menu. |
