Burger fans, rejoice. DC has its own super-hot/ultra-cool joint for burgers made with interesting toppings and house-made buns, as well as luscious shakes. Burger Tap & Shake (BTS) is the little sister of Jeff Tunks’ District Commons. In fact, the two are joined by a shared passageway and a prep kitchen. Thanks to Tunks and his creative energies, burgers come standard with a choice of fancy toppings, or as signature versions with such names as Tejas for a Texas chili con carne burger or Southern Comfort for a patty served with pimento cheese, fried green tomato and Vidalia onions. Some like it hot, and will choose the Apache Sweat Lodge, slathered with fire-roasted green chiles, pepper jack cheese and an XXX sauce that kicks it up a notch. Shakes come in classic vanilla, chocolate or strawberry flavors, and as oddball concoctions such as the BTS: Butterfingers, Twix and Snickers. Want something stronger? Check out the wine and draft beers list.
