Once upon a time in New York City, you could walk your cows across a narrow channel of the East River from Brooklyn to Governor’s Island through currents so strong farmers swore their milk turned to buttermilk. While that sand bar channel is a distant dredged memory, and bovine sightings in Manhattan are these days solely of the plastic and painted variety, Buttermilk Channel aims to recapture the home-style spirit of old. Lots of tables crowd the otherwise minimalist décor but flickering candlelight and soft chandelier lighting make for a cozy atmosphere, full of warm woods and airy windows around which locals gather with friends and family. Place your dairy cloth napkin in your lap and start with a cocktail from the full bar or a New York State beer. From the entrée menu, we recommend the sweet potato and pumpkin pasta with black olive rosemary butter. The signature buttermilk golden-fried chicken with crispy cheddar cheese waffles (yes, waffles) sprinkled with powdered sugar and accompanied by a maple-barbecue sauce is a pleasing, if Northern interpretation of this Southern classic. Choose between a caramelized brioche bread pudding and a root beer float for dessert. With a friendly staff, reasonably priced comfort food, and an inviting ambience, it’s hard to catch the subway home for a modern channel crossing back to Manhattan.
