In an area where Danish smörgåsbord reigns, Cabernet Bistro offers a clear alternative with its menu of wine-friendly, French comfort food. Jacques and Diana Toulet, chef and host respectively, operated the well-known Les Pyrenees in Santa Monica for 20 years before retiring to Santa Barbara’s wine country. The house specialty, roast duck, is done nearly half a dozen ways. Our favorite is the duck with cassis sauce but the green peppercorn version is also tops. Don’t forget other classics like escargot, endive with Gorgonzola, lamb loin with rosemary and garlic and poached salmon in cream sauce.
