| Another L.A. transplant (Café Midi on South La Brea) comes to Orange County in Café Beau Soleil. Located next to Daily Grill in Newport’s trendy Fashion Island shopping mall, Café Beau Soleil is a nice option for those here used to the luxury of European-style bistros. A well-heeled dark wood and zinc-topped coffee bar sits inside the bright space with colorful mosaic tile floors. Most of the action, however, is out on the sunny patio, where Newport’s hip crowd sits on traditional French café chairs. The menu by genteel chef-owner Edouard Moyal is surprisingly extensive. Breakfast is more of an American affair with eggs, toast, omelets and even pancakes. But come lunch, the menu is much more like a Parisian sidewalk café, except better because of the fresh and light California influences in its salads, sandwiches, burgers and pastas. Vegetarians are also pleased by Moyal’s inclusion of ingredients like tofu and mushrooms. Some come here for the very French croquet monsieur, which Moyal has interpreted on sourdough bread with melted Gorgonzola, prosciutto and basil. And as in L.A., this European-style café and bistro is attached to the über-chic American Rag store, boasting vintage and modern fashion, furniture and accessories in a decidedly eclectic space. |
