Cafe Dupont Restaurant Review: There’s a good reason why Café Dupont has become a favorite for couples celebrating anniversaries; the food is attractively plated and the atmosphere romantic. But those seeking a business lunch without leaving downtown will enjoy dining in this renovated circa-1870 space as well. The kitchen excels at light and crispy fried foods, so fried oysters and okra is a good choice, as is the lunchtime buttermilk fried chicken laid over creamed potatoes with a splash of lemon beurre blanc. Pan-seared confit duck breast sits atop Chilton County peach hash ringed by blueberry reduction, gnocchi and port-poached apples. Smoked Prime beef rib-eye with potato mushroom custard and fried red onions will brighten the day for steak lovers. Beignets with a snowy topping of powdered sugar bow to chef-owner Chris Dupont’s stint in New Orleans, and the chocolate budino with fresh fruit and candied pecans is a rich and satisfying finish to any meal. There’s a nicely selected wine list with some served by the glass, along with craft beer and cocktails. Wednesday happy hour from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. is a particularly good time to indulge in an after-work tipple, since that’s when Sidebar offers a lagniappe of snacks along with discounted drinks.
