 Diners at Café Dupont can opt for a tasting menu that allows one to sample all of the night’s dishes. That’s just what you’ll want to do when you get a taste of Chris Dupont’s offerings. A bar expansion has added space yet looks as if it has always been in the renovated circa-1870 storefront building. On the restaurant side, the warm-tone walls are lined with black sconces, and the white cloth-covered tables lend a romantic atmosphere. Start with fried green tomatoes and marinated crab claws, seafood rémoulade and heirloom tomato relish. Or try beef carpaccio with organic pea tendrils, fried capers and a touch of horseradish crème fraîche. Crispy buttermilk-fried chicken is a menu constant and served over mashed potatoes with a splash of lemon beurre blanc and basil chiffonade. Cornmeal-crusted Virginia Beach flounder is nestled with sweet corn succotash. Meat lovers will go for the braised beef short ribs and grilled flank steak with pomme frites and shiitake mushrooms. For dessert, the beignets, topped with snowy peaks of powdered sugar, are addictive. Or see if the pecan pie cake is available. There's a small, nicely selected wine list with some served by the glass.
