 There’s a process to eating at Café Express: You stand in line and place your order at the counter, and they’ll call you when it’s ready. Then you hit the condiment bar, which includes not only all the usual suspects but also a wealth of goodies like gherkins, capers, and assorted oils and vinegars. The range of the menu---burgers, pasta, salads, sandwiches, and more---is also appealing, although the cold sandwiches, as opposed to the hot ones, are uninspired. Go for the minestrone when it’s available; the herbed roasted chicken is excellent, and the pesto-topped fettucine is our pasta favorite. This place appeals to everyone---groups of business people gathered for lunch, moms with kids taking a break, solo diners poring over the free newspapers.
