| This is a stand-up bar in more ways than one. First, it the understated relative of Alice Waters' refined Chez Panisse. In other words, quality ingredients have been culled from the best purveyors in the Bay Area and brought to the zinc countertop for everyone's dining pleasure. Second, there are no seats or tables inside the narrow, stark space. Outside, overflowing into the tiny parking lot, a few tables are available when the weather is good. The menu doesn't boast fussy dishes, but who needs fancy-shmancy when you get farm-fresh eggs steamed with artisan cheese or perfectly tangy sourdough bread, skimmed with sweet butter and lined with fennel sausage? Lemon cheesecake, homemade biscotti dotted with raisins and apple cake make a perfect foil for dark, deeply flavored coffee. |
