Canaletto Ristorante Veneto Restaurant Review: Located on the outer circle of Newport Beach's Fashion Island is this Venetian-inspired Italian restaurant. Chef-partner Alfonso Sanna oversees the kitchens of the Il Fornaio-owned eatery, which has a sister restaurant at The Venetian resort in Las Vegas. The rather sexy white marble bar with an inlaid-wood ceiling may be one of Newport's best hot-spots for relaxing and socializing. The main dining room, with its barrel-shaped ceiling and romantic Italian vibe, is refreshingly soothing. Prices are also comforting, so order up some seasonal fresh oysters to start, or perhaps the swordfish carpaccio appetizer, a vegetable and bean soup or a meal-worthy, thick-crust pizza. As for the main course, try the scaloppine val gardena (grass-fed veal with chanterelles, asparagus and Prosecco sauce), pasticcio di pesce (fresh pasta layered with seafood and baked in a tomato béchamel sauce) or the juicy roasted chicken. Canaletto is known for its risotto, so consider the signature version with shrimp, scallops, calamari, cuttlefish and black ink. Also, don't pass up the fresh-from-the-oven warm cookie medley or the tiramisu for dessert. |
