| Located in the former Tutto Mare space at Fashion Island, Canaletto Ristorante Veneto is a Venetian-inspired Italian restaurant. Chef Maurizio Mazzon oversees the kitchens of this Il Fornaio-owned eatery, which has a sister restaurant at The Venetian resort in Las Vegas. The rather sexy white marble bar with an inlaid-wood ceiling may be one of Newport's best hot-spots for relaxing and socializing. The main dining room, with its barrel-shaped ceiling and romantic Italian vibe, is refreshingly soothing. The prices here are also comforting, so order up some seasonal fresh oysters to start or perhaps a warm octopus and potato salad, a vegetable and bean soup or a satisfying beet salad. The meal-worthy, thick-crust pizzas are also a good choice for a starter. As for the main course, try the scaloppine val gardena (grass-fed veal with chanterelles, asparagus and Prosecco sauce), pasticcio di pesce (fresh pasta layered with fresh seafood and baked in a tomato béchamel sauce) and the juicy roasted chicken. Canaletto is known for its risotto, so try the signature version with shrimp, scallops, calamari, cuttlefish and black ink. Don't pass up the fresh-from-the-oven warm cookie medley or the creamy tiramisu for dessert. |
