Canter's, Los Angeles, CA

Canter's Restaurant Review

: It’s funky and it’s been here forever (or at least since 1931), but if you want a Reuben, a bowl of chicken soup and a pickle late at night, there’s always Canter’s. Regulars swear by the deli’s in-your-face waitstaff, gargantuan sandwiches on fresh rye bread, and the tempting filled-to-the-brim bakery case front and center. Customers walking in, out or by always turn toward the array of Jewish pastries, cookies, brownies, cakes and breads. Some menu items stretch the usual deli fare to appeal to a wider clientele, as this place draws an eclectic crowd from far beyond the neighborhood. In addition to corned beef, pastrami and chopped liver, you’ll find quesadillas, panini-style sandwiches and a wide selection of burgers. Overall, the menu is enormous, and signature desserts include éclairs, black-and-white cookies and strudel. The adjoining Kibitz Room is a popular spot for cocktails and live music.
