Expect high energy at this corporate steakhouse, where rich woods and oil paintings collide with crisp black booths, geometric light fixtures and an exhibition kitchen to create a cluttered but classy atmosphere that smells of old money and new. By mid-afternoon, the Grille's bar is jammed with movers and shakers, chatting up clients via cell phone or wooing them over martinis. Frankly, the steaks, dry-aged on the premises, aren't half as interesting as the customers who eat them. Nevertheless, there are reasons to give The Capital Grille a whirl, and the wine list would be one of them. Appetizers of smoked Norwegian salmon and pan-fried calamari with hot cherry peppers are good too, as is lunchtime's fat cheeseburger. And if you think flourless chocolate cake is a been-there, ate-that situation, you haven't tried The Capital Grille's intense espresso rendition.

Capital Grille at the Biltmore - Horrible Service!
by crankypants_phoenix on 01/27/2012

The doors were opened for us by some nice-looking young men and we were seated right away. So far, so good, we thought…

Unfortunately, once we were seated the problem started. After pushing the Pineapple Martini on me (no drink menu provided) our blonde ponytailed server came back for our order. I had already eaten a very late lunch but my husband was starving – so I planned to order light and my husband was going to go for one of the many heavy protein items on the menu. After my husband ordered a bottle of Cabernet and some fried squid (the so-called Pan-Fried Calamari with Hot Cherry Peppers), we placed our orders for the meal. He ordered the Roasted Chicken and two sides – Grilled Asparagus and Parmesan Truffle Fries. I ordered the Lobster Bisque and the Wedge Salad as my main course.

As soon as she realized I ordered the Wedge Salad as my main course, our server was visibly miffed. Apparently, she thought I was a “cheap date” and turned on her heel, rudely cutting me off and walking away. At that point my husband and I decided that we were leaving. Screw it. The kitchen had surely already fired the Calamari so we decided we would eat that just to be respectful, and then cancel everything else and take our wine to-go.

The Calamari arrived and it was literally overwhelming. It could have served five and it was this heaping hot mess redolent of the onion rings you get at Burger King with a can of jalapeños tossed in at the last minute and then dumped on a plate. The server had apparently been instructed to try to serve the calamari onto our appetizer plates, and struggling with her utensils, she dropped the breaded, deep fried calamari rings on the table while managing to get at least a few onto our plates. We tried to cheerfully eat the mountain of calamari but the “hot cherry peppers” sent me into a sneezing fit.

I told my husband that I didn’t want to make a scene (I just hate confrontation) and that we shouldn’t make a big deal out of leaving. Fortunately, the kitchen gave us the excuse we needed. Apparently, they had run out of Roasted Chicken. My husband told the server that because they were out of Roast Chicken and he had high cholesterol that we were going to cancel our order and leave. At this point she stated that the next time we wanted to come to the Capital Grille we should call ahead and let them know that we would be ordering chicken so that they would have enough on hand. Really? Call ahead to say you’re ordering chicken?
