Not the truly down and dirty New Orleans joint that we had envisioned, Carmine’s is nevertheless raucous and good-natured enough, to overlook the exclusion of some Big Easy faves, and inclusion of some out of place, but well-prepared dishes: foie gras, truffled potatoes, craw fish spring rolls. Try instead the seared scallops in a tart sauce of black currant jam and vinegar, the garlic-crusted filet mignon of veal, and seasonal specialties. Bring cash, beer or wine, and join the throngs who realize that Carmine’s may have its own spin on New Orleans, but the food is one of the best bargains around.
