It’s easy to fall in love at first sight with Cetrella, the coastal, chic restaurant that gave Half Moon Bay one of its first dining destinations. Crisp, neutral colors and textures define its dining room, but elements such as a roaring fireplace keep Cetrella cozy and romantic instead of simply stylish. Loft-high ceilings soar above diners, outfitted with weathered wooden beams reminiscent of a factory. Fresh, local ingredients dominate here. Winter squash is turned into a velvety soup finished with three small pouches of herb ricotta ravioli; the squash’s natural flavors are so present, it’s like sipping autumn. Persimmons are woven into a little gems salad layered with prosciutto and punctuated with soft pieces of porcini cornbread. Elevated cuisine embellished with comfort accents comprises the theme here. Tender venison medallions are wrapped with bacon and plated with an interesting cilantro spätzle the texture of crispy puffed rice. Maine lobster, prepared fritto misto and served atop an al dente bed of saffron risotto with Parmesan foam, carries the sophistication of an elegant restaurant but the nostalgia of a seaside clam shack. A robust wine list touts more than 400 selections from around the globe. Desserts are bold and intense, as evidenced by a dense chestnut mousse with tones of espresso and vanilla and sprinkled with a grapefruit granita.
