: The sophisticated cuisine and flawless service pairs well with the clubby and elegantly romantic setting of this formal restaurant atop Nob Hill. Dark wood, rich fabrics, cozy rooms and the quiet-calm aura (despite a full reservation book) contribute to the fine dining experience. The American menu relies heavily on expertise-revealing, traditional European culinary techniques and the interplay between seasonal and luxury ingredients. Order the nine-course tasting menu (just by walking in the door you've already committed to a hefty bill); it is the surest route to discovering the talents of chef Melissa Perrello. A recent menu included butter poached lobster with crispy sweetbreads and curry essence, duck with a caramelized onion tartlet and aged balsamic pumpkin-seed oil, and a loin of beef resting in brown-butter potato gnocchi and wild mushrooms. Desserts hover above homespun, like the sun-dried apricot Napoleon with crème fraîche sherbet or the buttermilk panna cotta with huckleberry gelée.
