| This downtown landmark offers a slice of Paris with its classic French food and casual bistro ambience, bereft of pretense. The lacy curtains, tiny flower-filled anisette bottles and flickering candles easily draw in romantics, but even cynics are attracted to the elegantly constructed dishes. Chez Nous doesn’t partake in the rollercoaster highs and lows of trendy spots, staying firmly entrenched as a staple among Austin diners. Yet somehow, the three-course, prix-fixe dinner menu remains among the best-kept secrets in town. Appetizers that keep us coming back include the rich pâté maison, the savory escargots de Bourgogne bathing in garlic-parsley butter and plump mushrooms, and the baked goat cheese canapés. We also recommend the confits de canard, two grilled duck legs accompanied by a dried cherry and red onion marmalade with a balsamic syrup, and the quintessential French dessert, mousse au chocolat. Expect knowledgeable servers capable of pairing the appropriate wine to your menu selections. The wine list is exclusively French, ranging from versatile, low-priced table wines to premier cru. |
