| Ah, if only every neighborhood could have a Chez Nous of its own. Then diners wouldn't have to bear the parking scene in Pacific Heights or the wait for tables (since no reservations are accepted). These are minor dues to pay for the moderately priced menu loaded with satisfying, French-inspired small plates meant to be shared by everyone at the tightly packed tables. Thankfully, nothing has changed since the opening chef moved on. Petite lamb chops, quickly grilled to seal in all the juices, arrive still fragrant with lavender sea salt. True gnocchi melt on the tongue, leaving the earthy pancetta and spritely fava beans to be savored. Crisp and salty pommes frites, sprinkled with herbs, get a kick from a spicy Harissa aioli. Lip-smacking desserts, like cannelés de Bordeaux with crème anglaise and caramel, warm apple and sour cherry crisp topped with vanilla ice cream or chocolate pot de créme may be harder to share with your dinner companions. Servers may be harried from delivering an unending series of plates to all of the tables, but once by your side they offer as much as they can. The tiny space can generate a conversation-compromising volume level. |
