Chiwawa Restaurant Review: Authentic Mexican food and hot dogs may seem like an unusual pairing, but it’s all part of this Midtown café’s eclectic charm. The former (made without cheddar or sour cream) strays from the all-too-common Tex-Mex served in many Memphis restaurants, while the latter are dressed up with house-made mustard slaw, and some, like the Chiwawa Dog, come wrapped in bacon. For a real treat, try the Chiwawa Frito, a bacon-wrapped dog fried in a jalapeño-cornmeal batter. There’s even a hearty vegan hot dog served in a flour tortilla with slaw. Since items are served à la carte, be sure to order papas (french fries served with Memphis-style barbecue sauce) or the homemade chips and guacamole to round out the meal. Chiwawa’s spacious patio is the perfect place for relaxing with one of the signature tequila snow cones or whiskey popsicles.
