| The innate friendliness of this place extends to blue plate special nights Monday to Wednesday when customers descend for huge portions of classic meals---chicken with milk gravy, mashed potatoes, fresh green beans and cornbread for six bucks, anyone? Hand-dipped shakes and hand-cut fries remind you that this isn't your average joint. Further proof: The menu may be the only one in town with a meatloaf omelet and a polenta appetizer. City Diner is open through the night Friday and Saturday, so you can imagine what the wee-hours scene looks like here. There is less revelry at the Grand Center arts district location (541 Grand Blvd., 314-533-7500), though things do get frenetic before shows. |
