City Social Restaurant Review: Jason Atherton is behind City Social, situated in what was Gary Rhodes 24th floor restaurant in Tower 42, with Paul Walsh (from Restaurant Gordon Ramsay) in charge. British ingredients are the main attractions, given a thoroughly modern twist. The menu is divided into starters that are uncooked (beef tartare, sourdough crouton, goat's curd with truffle dressing, and imaginative salads) or cooked (pig's trotter and ham hock with black pudding, apple and Madeira or roast quail breast with peas and broad beans, pancetta and sauce diable). Pasta and rice have their own category that you can order as small or large plates, while mains divide into the ever-popular grill or the likes of sea bass with deep-fried oyster, cucumber and sea fennel in an oyster velouté or rack of lamb with shepherd's pie made from the shoulder. Desserts include an apple tarte Tatin with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce (but only for two) or rum baba with summer berries and strawberry sorbet. The décor is sophisticated with dark wood floors, rosewood paneled walls, chrome and mirrors and smoked glass with a black-steel kitchen in the center of the room. But it's the view over the Square Mile that takes the prize.
