Clay's Smokehouse Grill Restaurant Review: Chef/owner Michael Slyman draws on his Southern childhood and experience working in his uncle's Oklahoma rib house for his Northwest restaurant. The interior of this welcoming, family-friendly establishment is pure Texas. There are even a few picnic tables dotting the sidewalk. Chicken, pork, beef, catfish and salmon are barbecued over a smoky blend of hickory, mesquite and alder woods. But the vegetables and salads are equally worthy. Smoked turkey salad with white cheddar shavings and pecans, and the smoked pork loin, sliced over greens dotted with blue cheese, are hands-down winners. Potatoes with garlic sauce are a meal unto themselves. There are also several options for vegetarians, including a corn and barley salad topped with a vibrant smoked tomato salsa, or sautéed greens with ginger vinegar over rice. Wash everything down with a tall glass of iced tea, or choose from the dozen or so artisanal beers. For dessert, grab a slice of the homemade peanut butter or pecan pie. Children receive not only their own menu, but coloring supplies and toys.
