Opened in 1951 across the street from bustling Newport Pier, The Crab Cooker is a classic American seafood restaurant---a casual, kid-friendly shanty with simple tables, paper plates and an eclectic décor. This place is so down to Earth, in fact, that former President Nixon stopped by once and was told to stand in line like everyone else. However, don't discount this Newport staple because the fish here is reliably fresh and nicely cooked. Always on the menu is Pacific Dungeness crab, Alaskan red King and Killer crab claws, fresh-caught Dana Point spiny lobster and other fish and shellfish flown in from around the world. Regulars stop by often for a comforting bowl of the Manhattan clam chowder. The wine list is rather decent with some nice California selections by the glass and bottle.
