| A “Welcome to Italy” sign should grace the doors over Cucina Alessá, an upscale yet rustic Italian bistro with intimate dining rooms and a small bar. Located right on Pacific Coast Highway in a north end neighborhood called Newport Shores, Alessá is a good place to hang out and enjoy some of OC's most authentic Italian fare. Chef and proprietor Alessandro Pirozzi, who was formerly with Pomodoro Cucina in Newport Coast, brings his mother's and grandmother's recipes and his own fresh and seasonal culinary flair to breakfast (weekends only), lunch and dinner. Don't miss starting with Nonna Ida’s minestrone soup and then go for the well-balanced Caesar salad, which is tossed with tangy homemade dressing. Grandma Pirozzi’s rustic Napoli lasagna dish is a standout, as are the rolled-this-morning ravioli and gnocchi. Coming from Naples, Pirozzi is a master of the thin crust pizza with gourmet toppings. |
