| All Little Italy mourned the passing of Mimmo Cricchio, this restaurant's founder and guiding light. But his wife Mary Ann has vowed to keep the Da Mimmo tradition alive. And so, the orange-neon-edged eagle grabbing the earth in its talons on the outside of the building continues to say it all: Flamboyance is the signature of this Sicilian restaurant. From the entry walls lined with signed celebrity photos to the wildly generous portions---with prices to match---to the occasionally you-don't-deserve-us service, the atmosphere is bacchanalian and the crowd suitably raucous. House specialties like the gargantuan center-cut veal chop and the Cadillac-size lobster tetrazzini get mixed reviews, but the whole point is excess. When the kitchen hits its mark, food, scenery and swoony live Italian tunes combine for one exhilarating ride. Always, we repeat, always ask the price of the specials or that ride could end with a credit card crash. |
