| Cramped, crowded and often noisy, Delux is the haute spot for burgers and beer---Niman Ranch beef burgers, that is, and trendy suds from boutique breweries in the U.S. and Belgium. This is pub fare with flair, offered in a clean, contemporary setting that feels more like L.A. or New York than Phoenix. And that's no coincidence, given that owner Lenny Rosenberg loosely patterned his place after the wildly popular Father's Office in Santa Monica. More long than wide, the room sports a bar along one side, a row of banquettes along the other and a granite-topped community table smack down the middle. A TV hung in the corner goes largely ignored. Who needs the tube when there are beer flights to sample and babes to ogle? Don't mistake Delux for a pick-up bar, however, because virtually everybody shows up---businessmen, couples and little old ladies with blue hair. Of course, the boomers and old folks come early for a short list of burgers, sandwiches and salads, fleeing before the Gen X & Yers settle in for the evening. Don't miss the excellent roasted beet salad (with glazed pecans and Maytag blue cheese) or the Delux burger, infused with a cheese mixture of Maytag and Gruyère, then topped with applewood-smoked bacon, caramelized onions and arugula. For dessert, we suggest a heavenly chocolate malt or fudge lava cake. |
