| Known as the "Duck" by locals, this gourmet sandwich shop, partial to premium ingredients, has been a Phoenix institution for 30 years. A popular take-out joint with the nine-to-five crowd, the Duck also sells fine wines, cheeses and fancy foods. Locals show up on weekends for a leisurely afternoon on the patio, where they skim the paper, listen to live music and sip vino. The patio tray, which features cold cuts, cheeses, crackers and fruit, is a good accompaniment. Meanwhile, those with heartier appetites should try the signature albacore tuna sandwich, chunky with water chestnuts and emulated all over town. Even the tiniest budget can get a filling bargain, too, with the daily combo special that feature a sandwich, soda and your choice of a cookie or chips. |
