El Adobe de Capistrano Restaurant Review: Located in the heart of downtown San Juan Capistrano, this restaurant is loaded with rich history. Parts of the building date back to the 1790s, and former President Richard M. Nixon liked to drop by during and after his administration. Nixon’s presence is still felt here --- there’s a table and chair set dedicated to him in the sprawling, airy environs, and Nixon’s love for the special Mexican food prepared exclusively for him led the place to permanently switch the cuisine from continental to its current milieu. The classically prepared Mexican cuisine fits rather well with the hacienda-style ambience, not to mention the house-made margaritas. Expected dishes like tacos, burritos, carnitas and enchiladas share the menu with mesquite-grilled items such as salmon with chipotle cream sauce, chicken breast with mango salsa and mango vinaigrette, and a homemade vegetable tamale. Desserts are a mix of Mexican standards and Southwestern delights (sopapillas). Those headed to the famous nearby Mission on Sundays can enjoy selections from the extensive brunch menu.
