El Cholo Restaurant Review: El Cholo is an institution in Los Angeles, founded by the Borquez family in the 1920s. This location near the Irvine Spectrum features a comfortable décor; thankfully, it exudes more south-of-the-border class than Mexican kitsch. El Cholo is known for its strong margaritas, so remember to try one out, along with the never-ending chips and salsa. The "grand tradicional" margarita, as strong as it is, even comes with an extra shot of tequila on the side. The family-friendly place offers the noted green corn tamales May through October exclusively. Other dishes to consider include the tasty blue corn enchiladas, sizzling fajitas, combination platters featuring items such as chile relleno and rolled tacos, burritos and hearty meat selections. Vegetarians may opt for Annie's "early California" enchilada with its grilled fresh vegetables, sautéed mushrooms and jack cheese surrounded by a white corn sauce and tomato salsa.
