| Decked out in faux British pub décor and offering a part-Yankee/part-Brit menu, the Elephant & Castle provides a lively setting for casual get-togethers. Smack dab in downtown DC, the pub has a very serious upfront bar area for the happy hour crowd. But if you are more interested in hearty fare, you'll end up in the quieter dining areas towards the rear of the restaurant. Erase the notion that all you'll find are burgers and beer, though there are plenty of both. Scan the menu for several house specialties and British classics: the Guinness Irish stew is a surprisingly good composition of tender lamb cubes in a rich, brew-based gravy and served over a mound of mashed potatoes. Another star, the Jameson chicken, has just the barest suggestion of pricy Scotch in its cream-sauced chicken and potato pancakes. Americanized appetizers and entrées include the ubiquitous potato skins, quesadillas and chicken wings, plus trendy salads, like a Thai chicken salad with peanut sauce. Also located at 900 19th NW (at I St.), 202-296-2575. |
