Walk in, turn right at the serene water wall and you're smack-dab in one of Denver's most popular local watering holes. Strewn with multiple TVs tuned to sporting events, a baby grand piano and a sports memorabilia display showcasing star Bronco quarterback John Elway's impressive career, it's a lively gathering place for singles on the prowl, pin-striped business executives and couples who enjoy the live music. Elway, for whom the restaurant is named, occasionally drops in to nosh on a steak and graciously sign autographs for the fans who still consider the football great Denver's leading celebrity. The dim-lit dining room, bedecked with white linens, curved booths and scenic photos depicting Colorado's landscape, is elegantly rustic and short on pretense. The menu favors primal cuts of wet-aged, hand-cut Prime-grade steaks alongside fresh fish, chicken, lamb and fan favorites like the beef enchiladas lobbed with piquant red chile. We're also partial to the bone-in rib-eye, charred in all the right places and dribbling with crimson juices. Like all good cow palaces, the à la carte side dishes are worth the trip. Our hands-down favorites are the buttery Yukon gold, skin-on mashed potatoes, creamed corn and green chili macaroni and cheese. The dining room is overseen by a gracious and solicitous staff, and the globalized wine list, while requisitely expensive, offers nearly 60 pours by the glass and more than 350 selections available by the bottle. |
