Creole classics are the theme at Delmonico, but don’t be surprised by a good bit of the modern-day snap for which proprietor Emeril Lagasse is known. Chef Spencer Minch oversees the kitchen and the menus, and keeps the place adventurous. The menu offers small, medium and large plates, and each of those categories has its own distinctive items. Standouts on the small plate section include the crab croquettes with mirliton slaw, cilantro and sweet pepper marmalade; on the medium list, lamb meatballs with caponata; and of the large plates, the Berkshire pork shank. Steak options include filet mignon and in-house, dry-aged New York strip. Minch understands the local palate, and includes enough variety to satisfy even international travelers. Lagasse poured more than a few million dollars into transforming this primly elegant, hundred-year-old Creole restaurant into a fantasy of glitz and plush as befits his showman’s legacy. Happy hour (Monday-Friday 5 p.m.-7 p.m.) offers a creative bar menu and specially priced cocktails. New Orleans is a casual town, but you can get dressed up for Delmonico, and plan to linger.
