THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Encore Restaurant Review: Chef José Gutierrez spent 22 years working at the renowned Chez Philippe inside The Peabody Memphis before launching his own restaurant. At Encore, the French-born Gutierrez, who learned his craft under such mentors as Paul Bocuse, serves up classic bistro fare such as crispy lemon chicken paillard with baked macaroni gratin. His sirloin Encore burger is perhaps the best in town, and the accompanying pommes frites are certainly unrivaled. A lively wine list of mostly affordable California and French wines as well as a colorful menu of martinis and cocktails (try the Diva made with orange vodka, Cognac and blood orange purée) add to the fun. Despite Gutierrez’s origins, the wine list is clearly American, and offers numerous good choices by the glass. The décor is simple and elegant without being pretentious, and the service is professional and personable.
