 Equus Restaurant & Loungebar Restaurant Review: The relaunched, revitalized restaurant inside the FountainGrove Inn is nothing like its tired predecessor. It’s now a worthwhile, off-the-radar pick for Santa Rosa dining. Enter a cave-like foyer and await your table from a stylish, low slung white sofa against a rock wall. The dim dining room has a mod feel, with high-back crescent banquette clusters lit by glowing battery-op candelas that look like lopped off light sabers, and a step-up perimeter with more tables along a brick red wall. The kitchen handles starters with finesse: roasted Anaheim pepper soup with sweet corn kernels, chicken and a controlled burn; a trio of delicately fried squash blossoms served atop a vibrant watercolor swirl of basil oil, red chili and creamy garlic sauces; a generous bowl of fat shrimp scampi with charred garlic toast. Juicy hanger steak pairs well with lightly dressed watercress, cherry tomatoes and indulgent truffle frites with blue cheese. Pistachio-dusted halibut comes with a garden of haricots verts, edamame and blanched yellow pear tomatoes. For dessert, the chocolate malt crème brûlée is rich with vanilla bean, or diners may opt for a nightcap at the lively bar in the building's other wing. |
