Proprietor Sumi Chang worked with Nancy Silverton at Campanile and trained at Paris’ renowned pâtisserie, Lenôtre, and it shows. This tiny, unpretentious bakery---a gathering place for local foodies---specializes in breads that go easy on fat, sugar and dairy. The flaky scones, white chocolate cakes, brownies, lemon bars, strudel and croissants, however, are rich in butter, sugar, eggs and cream. Also tempting are the blueberry muffins, chocolate bread and sticky buns. Chang’s bittersweet chocolate tart is a memorable, intense experience and she has begun making delicate Parisian-style macarons with inventive Pierre Hermé-inspired flavors. Sandwiches are offered, too, and the creamy open-faced egg salad, layered with greens and sun-dried tomato paste, is one of L.A.'s all-time great snacks.

One of the best lunch spots in Pasadena

There are so many wonderful things about this little bakery/cafe in Pasadena. Their sandwiches, although a bit pricey, are excellent. Be sure to try the tomato and feta or their famous, ridiculously rich open faced egg salad. Macarons are to die for—sea salt and caramel is the best. Other desserts are rich and have that wonderful homemade look (in case you need to impress guests but don't have the time to bake). Iced coffee is good and strong. I've heard lots of bad things about snooty/lackadaisical servers, but who cares when the food is this good? Service is a bit slow if you're in a hurry, and it's always busy there, so be sure to go early, as some pastries/breads tend to sell out fast, and for good reason.
