| Located in a shady strip mall, Famous Kabob truly is an oasis of fine dining in a sea of suburban mediocrity. One step inside and images of the neighboring fast-food joints, mini-marts and gas stations are washed away by the regal ambience created by dim lighting, dark wood and gold accents. The menu is similarly upscale, featuring traditional Persian delicacies, with an emphasis on kabobs and stews. Diners are greeted with a simple offering of pita bread, feta, radishes, onion and mint, but other appetizers, including stuffed grape leaves and sautéed eggplant, are also available. For a main dish, kabobs are the way to go, with selections including fire-grilled lamb, beef and chicken, served with saffron-scented basmati rice. The kabob barg is tender and flavorful, the thin slices of filet mignon well seasoned. Another good bet is the gormeh sabzi---beef stew---hearty and well-balanced with a mixture of Persian herbs, kidney beans and tart, sun-dried lime. Finish off a meal with a traditional dessert, such as the rosewater and saffron-infused ice cream. Service can be less-than-friendly, but in no way distracts from an otherwise elegant meal. |
