Kevin Klause (formerly of the White Dog Café), James Barrett and Wendy Smith Born of Metropolitan Bakery fame have fashioned a light, bright restaurant dedicated to serving good tasting food that utilizes local products. The emphasis is on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Salads are first-rate, especially the Tuscan grain salad nutty with organic spelt and chopped garden vegetables, and the heirloom apple and Amish smoked cheddar with roasted pecans and cider-thyme dressed spinach. Service can be uneven and some dishes sound better than they taste---such as a sadly overcooked herb roasted chicken breast. But when flavor combinations work, as in the yellowfin tuna grilled with lemon and served with green beans, new potatoes and tarragon-caper aïoli, or the St. Peter’s fish sautéed simply with lemon butter, life is good. A selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes like butternut risotto croquettes could convert a carnivore. A Metro Café serves coffee and Metropolitan bread and pastries up front every day but Monday.
