| Despite its prime location near Berkeley’s famed Gourmet Ghetto, and despite the sometimes enormous lines and wait times to get inside, this little neighborhood spot with the cute name is nothing but a modest, down-to-earth diner and bakery. (Another Fat Apple's thrives in El Cerrito.) The no-frills dining room décor includes light wood tables and a large mural tribute to Jack London; next door, a functional bakery counter greets a daily stream of hungry young people from the nearby middle school. Made daily and seasonally, a wide array of pies includes the house special olallieberry. Breakfasts are also available; basics such as pancakes (try the pumpkin version) and french toast prevail. (Tip: Next door’s baked goods can be substituted for toast.) Overall prices can be a little steep for the product. Mainly people come here for the pretense-free welcome, ease, American staples and family-friendly atmosphere. |
