Dining room at Fatty Crab, New York, NYFatty Crab’s uptown space builds on the hipster equity of its slightly cramped downtown location’s digs with a larger main dining room and a side room that actually allows for meaningful conversation. This is not cuisine for the timid. Zak Pelaccio’s Malaysian street food is strident, creative and sometimes over-the-top hot, but always in a good way with a variety of exciting spice combinations and flavors that make for inventive eating. Put down that pinky finger and tuck into the signature Chili Crab, where the mountain of napkins served alongside is a strong hint at what is to come. A tangy blend of thick, gooey sauce lies in waiting for dipping bread and succulent crab that must be teased out of the claws and body with crackers and tiny forks. It is immensely satisfying. Another signature dish, the Fatty Duck, consists of golden fried duck pieces surrounded by a pungent sauce with Thai basil and other heat. And the heat goes on, with the death-defying kang kong belacan, a side of spinach stoked with sriracha, that wondrous sauce made from chilies and garlic. If you're feeling merely peckish, try the Fatty sliders, featuring spiced pork and beef burgers. Fatty Crab’s menu of eclectic cocktails---some inspired by the legendary Trader Vic’s---or a glass of sweet Riesling help douse the fire.
