| Each location in this local chain is a suave, velvet-lined affair of crimson, ochre and black. By day, such surroundings elevate the café and bakery above your average sandwich shop; by night, they’re downright romantic. A selection of “preludes”---savory small plates such as grilled chicken-feta pizza with lemon cream---are just that: decent excuses to get to dessert already. Chef Nicole Coady’s creations are always pretty, always pricey and sometimes tasty; while the Temptation sampler for two is a turn-on for couples, a rotating selection of sweets like pineapple upside-down cake with sea-salted crisps are good-n-plenty for one. But on bad days---more frequent as the company expands---Finale does indeed feel like a product, not a producer of lovingly homemade desserts. |
