| Firebird is a bit of an odd bird. That is, unless you like your dinner served with a side of pre-Tsarist decadence. Attentive servers wear Cossack uniform-like costumes and serve classically haute Russian cuisine. Perhaps, surprisingly, it all works. Of course, it's hard to go wrong with caviar and Champagne. But the food impresses, too. Signatures include grilled sturgeon with sorrel-potato purée, braised carrots and chanterelle mushrooms in a horseradish sauce; lamb dumplings with minted yogurt; and the marinated lamb shashlik with fruit and almond pilaf and red pepper salad. Next door is Café Firebird---a perfect post-theatre locale---which features a cabaret with quality singers and, of course, lots of vodka. |
