Five Feet, which is located just off downtown Laguna Beach’s main Forest Avenue drag, delivers inventive Asian-French fusion fare to a loyal, well-heeled clientele. Chef and proprietor Michael Kang took what could have been a boring industrial building and turned it into an art-filled post-modern space with a sophisticated buzz. Kang’s food is known for being exuberantly flavored and spiced---sometimes perhaps a touch too much so. And like the art work of local Laguna artists on the cement walls, each item is presented beautifully on oversize plates. The whole braised catfish with tomato citrus ginger sauce is a perennial favorite. Kang’s daily “creations” are always worth a try as we’ve enjoyed many fine dishes such as the boneless beef short rib with hoisin barbecue sauce, a peppered New York steak with Asian-style white chocolate mole, and scallops and foie gras with grilled mango in a port wine essence. Some come for the reasonable four- and five-course wine pairing menus, which always feature signature dishes alongside the daily specials. This contemporary restaurant also features fine wines and topnotch service.
