A brainchild of entrepreneur Ravine Lal Hiranand, fresheast serves up simple, fresh and healthy food that draws inspiration from Asia and India. The restaurant has a considerable presence on the corner of Santa Monica and Robertson boulevards, and the sleek modern space features high ceilings, birdcage light fixtures, New York subway tiles and Japanese panels carved from reclaimed wood. The environmentally conscious theme continues with biodegradable bamboo plates---even the logo for fresheast reminds us of the universal recycling symbol. Chef Jonathan Schwichtenberg, an alum of the Hotel Bel-Air and Hotel Casa 425, turns out tasty dishes without the benefit of using butter, salt or nuts. Options include spicy garlic wheat noodles, Goa shrimp and vegetables roasted in the tandoor oven, and Emperor's Lamb prepared with onions, red bell peppers and green onions. For dessert, there are seasonal housemade sorbets. Wine is specially provided and custom labeled for fresheast by Eden Canyon Vineyards near Paso Robles. Happy hour is offered daily from 4 p.m.-7 p.m., with half-off beer and wine. A selection of organic Tulsi Teas is also available for purchase. Bikers and drivers of hybrid cars receive a 10% discount off their bills, and the restaurant donates a percentage of profits to Doctors Without Borders.
