THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED G Restaurant Review:

Kathy G. Mezrano built one of Birmingham's most successful catering businesses before opening G downtown near the Federal Courthouse. The soaring ceiling, silver stairway and modern art give it a sleek, sophisticated look. Chef Geoffrey Slate pulls from world cuisines, so dishes with Asian, African, Creole or Japanese influences may appear. A spinach wrap with flank steak, arugula and manchego may be bland and surprisingly skimpy on meat. However, the sweet potato fries and homemade red pepper ketchup accompanying it are terrific. The spicy green tomato soup with peppered shrimp and smoked bacon is a signature dish. Lunchtime diners might choose the BLGT---bacon, lettuce and fried green tomato sandwich with fresh mozzarella and sweet potato fries---or the soy ginger-grilled salmon with Asian greens and crispy noodles. For dinner, we suggest Moroccan seared lamb rack with Spanish rice tortilla, grilled tomato and arugula; or the pecan-and-dried-cherry-stuffed quail with Alabama goat cheese grits cakes and tiny green beans. The Maker's Mark bourbon brûlée is a silky delight with a crunchy walnut and caramelized sugar topping. The wine list changes often, and G is one of the few places to offer the option of half-glasses so guests can try more food and wine combinations.
